CASTING IDENTITY
an iceland travelogue

air iceland (9/01/04)

we pack up, make sandwiches and taxi to the airport. we nearly check our bags onto a flight heading north because we are early and eager. the woman at the counter is patient and doesn't charge us for the dense luggage filled with metal bits, batteries, records, wires, tools and books. she tags them for the correct easterly flight. one more passport check and we are on the tarmac ducking past tethered propellors.

we land and elisabeth greets us warmly. skuli, the director, is heading to rekjavik for an exhibition and heads to the plane after a brief introduction. the air is cool and still laced with small wind driven drops of water. we're advised to investigate a local grocery before heading to skriduklaustur, which, we're told, is in "the country."
