Sutro Hawks In Action

After half an hour of hunting over Sutro Baths and fiercely chasing off any gulls or Ravens with an intensity that seemed more like a hunt than a territorial outburst, the male Red-tail dropped quickly over the north pines and emerged with this gopher. Here he is awaiting the arrival of the female.

The female lands and immediately commandeers the gopher. The size difference is quite apparent.

The female departs clutching the gopher by the head.

She gains altitude and flies to a regular spot in the pines. After a hunt it is a reliable place to find the two hawks.

Eschewing the innards for the good stuff.

A gopher foot protrudes.

Even I thought this image needed a little warning sign. I think it is because the intestines are still connected to the gopher. It's gross but it is interesting. Red-tails (Red-shoulders too) really don't like to eat this part of their prey.

Cleaning her bill.

Considering an unsuspecting tourist for desert.

A Bushtit dives for cover.
