For the second night running, beautiful light precedes deadly acts under cover of night.

First the beautiful moments. This Anna's Hummingbird let me get very close as long as I remained calm. He kept returning to this perch after his territorial sorties.

Spinning around to keep a sharp eye on the surroundings.

The Great Blue Heron appears and passes close by.

Wild Turkey? No, the Heron crouches down before taking flight.

Taking flight in the grass dunes.

Making its way to the lawn where it has had great success with gophers in the past month.

Stabbing into a gopher's hole with great force, the Heron stretched its wings to balance.

Having had no luck on the lawn, the Heron flew to an elevated patch to survey the gopher holes from a distance.

As night fell, it flew back down onto the lawn.

It clearly had its sights set on this gopher. By the time I looked up, the Heron had already plucked it from its burrow and was subduing it.

Here it takes its prize to the lagoon for a dip.

If you are partial to swallowing your meals whole, dipping your gopher helps ease the transition.
