To L.A. and Back

I just took a weekend trip to lecture and perform in Los Angeles. When my schedule allowed, I surveyed Echo Park. Here are a few of those moments along with images from stops during the road trip.

A swarm of activity as Cliff Swallows attend to their nests. No problems with air traffic control, everyone seems to know who has the right of way.

One arriving, one departing, and the one on the right deciding to return another time.

Los Angeles air traffic.

Hollywood Heron.

Strange for this northerly fellow to see these birds backed by palm trees.

There were at least 3 active nests on the island in Echo Park.

Here an expectant bird looks on while its partner arrives in dramatic fashion.

This little Brown-headed Cowbird stayed still just long enough for a portrait.

One of the resident Great Blues departs while another kind of resident looks on.

A Swainson's Thrush seems curious about the strange and insistent companion shadowing it through the trees at Mercey Hot Springs.

In Panoche Valley, the Wild Turkeys strut in iridescent splendor.

Meanwhile, high above on the hillside, a young Golden Eagle comes to rest on a rock. Ground squirrel alarms quickly ensued.

I watched this Great Horned Owl as the sun went down on Owl Rock.

But only now do I see that smooth round shape nestled in the stone. Do my eyes deceive me or is it sitting on an egg?
