The Long Way Home

Returning to San Francisco from the Headlands on a sunny day - I went home the long way. Here are a few highlights.

Swallows floating over Lake Merced in the warm light of the setting sun.

Every so often an out-of-focus shot makes the cut - I like the backlit birds in stark contrast with the scalloped rolling waves below.

Still hanging in there. At least one Great Horned Owl persists at Rodeo Lagoon in the Marin Headlands.

Relocating from sunlight to thicker cover in the upper branches.

Following the squawking calls of other departing Night Herons, this one finally leaves its perch, as shadows envelop Lake Merced.

Starlings congregate in orderly fashion.

A simple gull emerging from behind the tree line is enough to send the flock up in a flurry of wings and chatter.

One by one they return and settle onto the line.
