A morning visit to Alcatraz was surprising. I new birds nested there but wasn't prepared for the diversity and intensity of the avian inhabitants.

Landing on the pathway near the Snowy Egret nesting area.

Then displaying its breeding plumage while rousing.

A Black-crowned Night Heron passes by while people below exit the ferry.

Another view of a Night Heron as it circumnavigates the island.

A pigeon Guillemot departs...

and then returns moments later to join its partner.

Displaying its brilliant feet while landing.

The Brandt's Cormorant colony on Alcatraz.

A cormorant high on the cliff with two young dozing in the nest.

Egret activity was high near the nests. Many birds came and went over the course of an hour.

Gliding in towards the nests.

Putting on the brakes before touching down.

This one wears a stylish bracelet and shows off the red lores that signify a bird in breeding condition.

A fuzzy-headed youngster in the bushes waiting to be fed.

Common Murres near the ferry.

I highly recommend a visit if you are interested in seeing birds and environments that are rare in the city.
