A Week in the Headlands

Highlights from the first week of my 3-month residency at the Headlands Center for the Arts.

Rodeo Lagoon on a Sunny Afternoon

A dramatic glimpse of the Rodeo Lagoon River Otters and their predatory ways. Plus some other birdy sights from the city.

Arguello Redshoulder

Catching a glimpse of the Red-shouldered Hawks near Arguello Gate was enough to make me pull over and see what they might be up to.

Up Close and Personal

Eye to eye encounters during the past year.

The Mighty Mallard Review

A recap of interesting Mallard moments in San Francisco and beyond.

The Long Way Home

Returning to San Francisco from the Headlands on a sunny day - I went home the long way. Here are a few highlights.

Friday Out

A relatively quiet tour of the city produced a lovely Wilson's Warbler and a few hawks near the ocean.

Playing Catch Up

BLW is back. Here are the more interesting moments collected during the last few dormant weeks.

Summer Solstice Sunday Sightings

El Polin Springs, Lafayette Park, Sutro Heights. A nice afternoon spent in a few of the city's birdy places.

Small Birds

El Polin Springs and Sutro Heights Park illustrate that tiny feathered experiences can be just as good as having a hawk at your feet.

Sutro Hawks Explore - Clark's Closer

Another view of the Clark's Nutcracker. Then an overview of Red-tail activity at Sutro Heights Park.

Clark's Nutcracker at El Polin Spring

Over lunch I went to seek out the Clark's Nutcracker and he quickly appeared and descended to the spring. I tracked the active bird as it fed for about 20 minutes in the pines before I had to get back to work.

Sutro Juvies Explore

The young hawks, temporarily, inexplicably, and arbitrarily known as "Fat Man" and "Little Boy," were exploring their surroundings this morning.

Sutro in Sun and PFA

A visit to Sutro Heights during sunset found the young hawks exploring in the treetops. At the PFA lagoon the next day, the Red-shoulder payed a visit and an Egret fiddled with sticks.

Sutro Fledglings

The Sutro Red-tails have successfully fledged 2 young this year. I arrived in time to witness 3 food deliveries to the fledglings who flew easily, if still haphazardly, through the trees.

Four in One

Four posts in one. An afternoon at Ocean Beach, a trip to Alcatraz, a graphic look at a Red-tailed Hawk dining, and other birds of the city.

Doves, Finches, and Mad Hawks

Red-shouldered Hawks in the Presidio let me know I was close to a nest by acting like Goshawks and dive-bombing me... so I retreated to photograph the doves and finches that hovered in the periphery of the nest site.

Sutro Hawk Fog Hunting

The male Red-tailed Hawk at Sutro Baths set off on his hunting rounds in the midst of the heaviest fog of the day.

Variety Pack

A recap of intriguing moments during a week in the city.

Owl Close-ups

Under the mother's watchful eyes, I was able to get a few intimate portraits of the Rodeo Lagoon Great Horned Owl chick.

Marin Owls Welcome the Night

This morning and evening I lounged on a hill strewn with poison oak until the Great Horned Owls relaxed and went about their business.

Daily Encounters

The past week I was able to get out a bit - but had no time to post the images. Here is a selection from the surprising collection of moments I stumbled into.

Sutro Drama & Other Tuesday Moments

Sutro Baths offered up some interesting glimpses - territorial Red-winged Blackbirds, a Black Pheobe nest, steady hunting from the Red-tail male, a brief appearance from the female and a wonderful revelation of their nest location.

Glen Park Owl Chicks

Luigi and I took a bike ride to Glen Park to see what all the fuss was about. It is well deserved, the little owls are pretty spectacular.

Wanderings

Birdy encounters have been sporadic over the past two busy weeks. I was able to take a few breaks and here are the more interesting moments.

PFA Observations and Sutro Encore

Late afternoon at the Palace of Fine Arts and early evening at Sutro Baths.

Sutro Revelations

Calm warm skies and a hawk free dusk reveal other wonders at Sutro Baths.

Sutro Hawks and Sausalito Grebe

Checking out the bridge near Sausalito that houses the Peregrine scrape, all I saw were distant shorebirds and a Western Grebe tunneling through the water catching fish.

To L.A. and Back

I just took a weekend trip to lecture and perform in Los Angeles. When my schedule allowed, I surveyed Echo Park. Here are a few of those moments along with images from stops during the road trip

Commuting to Work

Moments from my 15 minute commute to work... which ends up taking 40 minutes.

Osprey Encounter and Sutro Hawks

A road trip up Mt. Tamalpais and beyond, to Point Reyes Bird Observatory, Bolinas Lagoon, and ending at Sutro Baths.

Crissy Field - Beautiful and Beastly

For the second night running, beautiful light precedes deadly acts under cover of night.

T.V. Better Than TV

Walking in Tennessee Valley this evening was a treat with beautiful light and tempered winds flowing over the green rock-strewn hills.

Sunday in the City

A birdy weekend tour of several locations in San Francisco.

Sutro Saturday

A relaxed afternoon at Sutro Baths.

Grand Egret Review

A review of some of the more interesting Egret moments from the last two years.

Around Crissy Field

An early evening walk produces feeding Willets and synchronous Crows.

Marin Headlands at Dusk

A Great Blue Heron and a well fed male Northern Harrier.

Berkeley Marina Night

A ghostly apparition in the East Bay.

Chain of Lakes - Dusk

Ravens rule the evening but hundreds of Bats own the night.
