ORIGINAL PHONOHARP This instrument was first designed in August of 2001 and was completed by the first week of September. It was a direct result of prior work developing multiple string stylophones. Instead of a stringed instrument to use with a turntable, I imagined a record player with strings built in, ferrying vibrations into the record and subsequently into the stylus. It was 5 feet long with 27 nylon strings. It could be played with fingers, mallets, chopsticks... the strings could be stressed and bent, and it had a 5 octave range. The sound was akin to that of a japanese koto... and very much like a harp as well. The turntable could be played percussively and the platter used as a gong.  |
