PHONOKORA

The Kora is a west african harp strung with fishing line. I always wanted to play one so I built this version and it just felt natural to put a turntable in it as well. This was the 7th Phonoharp and was built in July of 2003. The old Telefunken was a gift from a dear friend and the bridge I carved months before having the supplies to build the instrument. It has 21 strings and is played with both hands on either side of the bridge. It lacks the handles of traditional koras because it stands on its own three feet. There is an amplifier and speaker built in as well. The decorations are inspired by west african print designs.
