LAKE EFFECT

This project has now been designed for the Lagarfljot Lake in Eastern Iceland and can be adapted for nearly any shoreline. It is inspired by the phenomenon of the same name - air moving over a large mass of water and precipitating on the other side. This work harnesses the wind through the waves created as it moves over the water. It consists of a series of bells set on stalks in just offshore. They individually respond to waves from particular directions and can be tuned accordingly. The precipitation in this case is sound.

When the wind blows from the direction of Morocco, you hear a Moroccan scale. Wind from Japan... a Japanese scale, and so on. Dynamics are completely dependent on the wind strength and duration as these are the factors which influence the shape and pace of the waves.
