RAIN ACTIVATED ACOUSTIC TURNTABLES This project will be based in urban areas and uses water from rainfall and melting snow to play records chosen by those who live in the surrounding community. I propose building rain activated acoustic phonographs that will sit curbside like musical hydrants, waiting for the rain. They would be installed on slight inclines within the city. Run-off water would drive small internal paddles turning a series of gears and spinning a record which would be amplified acoustically using no electricity. Rainfall would start subtle music playing all over the city. During spring thaw, quiet music would float from the streets, underscoring the water's return to the sea. This work is a poem. It is a wordless work of poetry through sound installation. It is a statement about natural cycles, sensory awareness, seasonal change, cultural expression, and our inextricable ties to the land we occupy. ![]() |
